The EAACI Master Class on Perioperative Hypersensitivity was held in Verona, Italy, from 19–21 April 2022. Organised by the EAACI Drug Allergy Interest Group, the meeting brought together international experts in anaesthesia, allergy, and perioperative medicine for a focused educational programme on the recognition, investigation, and management of perioperative hypersensitivity.
The programme covered key areas including epidemiology, differential diagnoses, common and hidden causes of perioperative reactions, practical aspects of investigation, drug provocation, joint clinic models, difficult case discussions, and emerging research. Topics included tryptase interpretation, skin testing methods, specific IgE and basophil activation testing, antibiotics, neuromuscular blocking agents, chlorhexidine, polyethylene glycol, pholcodine-related NMBA anaphylaxis, and unmet needs in the field.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of international collaboration and multidisciplinary approaches to improving the diagnosis and future care of patients with suspected perioperative hypersensitivity.
